The Scholastic Clay Target Program
The
Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) is a team-based program for
students in elementary, middle/junior and senior high school whose goal
is to introduce youths to such clay target sports as trap, skeet and
sporting clays. These sports can be enjoyed for a lifetime. With a
coach and parent volunteers, it provides a supportive team-based
environment using clay target sports as a catalyst.
The
individual teams can be made up of any number of athletes. Each team
has squads based on academic year and experience within their respective
division, Rookie (5th grade and under), Intermediate (6th
through 8th grade) and Senior (9th through 12th
grade). The minimum size squad for sporting clays and skeet is 3. For
American trap, the squad size is 5.
As the
Oregon SCTP advisor for sporting clays, I am aware that we have a number
of shooting clubs throughout the state that support clay target sports.
What I don’t know and have had a difficult time determining, is the
status of shotgun youth programs at those clubs. I would appreciate
having youth program directors and coaches contact me so that I can
create a list of contacts for these programs. Your shotgun youth
program doesn’t have to be active in SCTP but I am hoping to create a
roster of youth teams that participate in shotgun sports that would be
available for future competitive and social gatherings. Even if you
currently do not have a team but are planning on starting one, I would
appreciate your contact information. If you don’t have a team but are
aware of shotgun youth programs that use your club for practice (i.e.,
4-H, Boy Scouts), please have them contact me as well.
If you
have a coach and athletes in elementary through high school who are
interested in clay target sports and wish to participate, I would
encourage you to get involved with SCTP. Specific information can be
obtained from the national website,
www.shootSCTP.org or you can contact me directly at 541-912-5230
or by email,
dendia@live.com.
Even if
you don’t wish to formally participate in SCTP nor have enough athletes
to form a team or squad but have individual youths who are participating
in clay target sports, they are more than welcomed to attend our SCTP
State Sporting Clay Championship, June 4, 2011 at Siuslaw Rod and Gun
club in Florence, OR. Last year’s event was quite successful and
our hosts, Jerry and Diane Harpole of Siuslaw Sporting Clays provided a
fun and challenging course for our participants. Individuals who are
not in SCTP would not be eligible for SCTP awards but would be able to
compete for individual awards. This is an excellent event where these
athletes can compete against other athletes within their age group and
experience level. SCTP teams who participate in the state championship
are eligible to go to the SCTP National Championships in Sparta,
Illinois, July 13 – 16, 2011.
Several
of our current athletes have expressed an interest in American trap. I
am going to try to and set up an Oregon SCTP State Trap Championship.
If your youth athletes are interested, please feel free to contact me.
As this develops, I will send out additional information.
